(South Australia) Less than an hour’s drive from Adelaide and minutes away from the beaches and a stunning coastline, McLaren Vale has over 65 wineries producing some of the best wines in the world. The warm climate lends itself particularly to the production of great Shiraz, said by many to be the best in the world – soft and juicy with raspberry, pepper, dark chocolate and black olive. This, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Merlot dominate the red wine varieties. During the mid-1980s, wine-growers were being encouraged by the government to pull out their Shiraz vines and replant the more popular Chardonnay vines. It is perhaps no surprise, therefore that the crisp, peachy Chardonnay and fruitier, fuller Sauvignon Blanc lead the white wine varieties of the region. Other varieties include, among the reds, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. White wines produced from local grapes include Marsanne, Roussanne, Semillon, Verdelho, and Viognier.
