Provence

Situated in south east coast of France adjacent to Italy with the Rhone River located on its western border, Provence is a region made up of rugged landscape, mountainous areas and high cliffs and peaks. It has a Mediterranean climate with long hot summers and an abundance of sunshine to ripen the grapes, with mild winters. One very important feature of Provence is the cold, dry winds that keep the climate stable across the region, however during the winter months these can reach speeds of up to 100km per hour. The key grape varieties grown in Provence are Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault, however some traditional local varieties such as Mourvedre, Tibouren and Vermentino (known as Rolle locally) are still favoured. While Provence produces both red and white wines, it is the elegant rose wines that account for over half of wine production in this region.
