St Estephe is situated close to the Gironde estuary, joining the Atlantic Sea. The soil is more clay and heavier in this region, and drains more slowly, which leads to full, robust wines with a reasonably high acidity. St Estephe offers many exciting, stylish and substantial wines, especially from the Cru Bourgeois Chateaux which can offer great value. St Estephe has traditionally produced robust, well-structured solid wines, deeply flavoured that can require many years to soften and mature. Those who have the patience to wait for these wines to mature are extremely well rewarded. Saint-Estèphe wines are very coloured, earthy, firm and tannic, however they do reach maturity slower than other Médoc wines.
