Swartland

Swartland, meaning “black country”, is a large area north of Cape Town stretching along the west coast. While most of the region has been given over the wheat farming, wineries over the last few years have built a reputation for the production of some very well-received wines. There has been notable success in the Swartland with red grape varieties associated with France's Rhone Valley, such as Shiraz, Mourvedre, Cinsault and Grenache, and with the white grape varieties Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc and Clairette. Low annual rainfall means that vines are grown in a non-irrigated, bush-vine formation which yields small quantities of high quality grapes.
