Walker Bay

Located in the larger Western Cape province of South Africa, Walker Bay is a cool climate viticultural area influenced by the cold Atlantic Ocean and mild temperate conditions. The coastal town of Hermanus is at the hub of this area, with vineyards spread across the Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) Valley where soils are made up predominantly of weathered shale on clay. The valley is sheltered by mountains on all sides by the Glen Varloch and Babylonstoring ranges and the Galpin Peak helping to trap cloud cover in order to retain moisture to create the ideal environment for the production of quality wines. Indeed, this small and relatively new region is beginning to make a name for itself in the production of Pinot Noir, particularly with winemakers, Bouchard-Finlayson and Hamilton-Russell using French oak barrels and very traditional winemaking to produce some excellent examples of Pinot Noir, as well as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
